Abstract
Methodology
Considerable research was done using the Internet. Information from various Web sites was studied and analyzed; evaluation of publicly available marketing and technical publications was conducted. Telephone conversations and interviews were held with industry analysts, technical experts and executives. The overriding objective throughout the work has been to provide valid and relevant information. This has led to a continual review and update of the information content.
Intended Audience
This report is intended for technical and marketing staff of organizations involved in the developing of proximity communications markets and applications. It addresses such communications technologies applications and marketing features.
For systems vendors, integrators and others, the report provides an analysis and assessment of competing products currently available as well as an estimation of the overall opportunities in the coming years. The end users can gain a more thorough understanding of products' market and capabilities.
The report's audience may also include a variety of technical and managerial groups that are working in the M2M arena.
Brief
The report addresses a progress in the development of user-friendly technologies: Near Field Communications (NFC) and TransferJet. It also analyses the applicability of NFC to enhance features of M2M devices.
NFC and TransferJet technologies are working in close proximity communications channels (centimeters range); and both allow an easy transmission initiation - a user just has to bring two devices close enough to each other.
NFC is designed primarily for authentication and payment transaction, based on wireless card technology. TransferJet is optimized for very high-speed wireless data transfer based on UWB wireless technology.
The report provides the up-to-date analysis of these technologies features, their applications, standardization, the industry and markets; with an emphasis on the NFC application for smartphones.
To illustrate this application, the detailed analysis of M2M technologies, their specifics, standardization, markets and the industry is also provided. The integration of NFC with smartphone opens a wide spectrum of opportunities for service providers, retails and financial industry; smartphone, essentially, is becoming a device supported by M2M technologies with sensing and communications abilities. M2M technologies can become an important component for next-generation smartphones.
With an addition of 'm-wallet' to the smartphone functionalities, it may serve as an 'universal' credit card, a pass for ticketing, and brings many other attractive applications. The report shows that the M2M industry is growing rapidly; and services based on communications between smart objects promise a variety of opportunities for providers that are extending the spectrum of their offerings.
