The Korean automotive industry has grown into a world class industry, since its government-driven inception in the 1980s. Today, South Korea is a major manufacturer of automobiles and ranks fifth in the world, behind China, Japan, USA and Germany. In 2010, 4.3 million vehicles were produced, a 21% increase from 2009. Over the last five years, South Korea has also developed into a major exporter of vehicles, exporting roughly two-thirds of its total production.
