Background to this research
Alternative automotive fuels containing, for example, alcohols and biodiesel are now well established in the global automotive energy market.
Some of these fuels have a different chemical composition to fossil diesel and gasoline. This means that new chemical reactions in the fuel system can lead to a range of problems including shorter component life, reduced performance, corrosion and clogging. Automotive fuel system components have therefore been modified to take account of these differences in chemistry as the new fuels have appeared at filling stations.
To establish a baseline for these developments, international fuel standards have been agreed, and the US, the EU and other regions have legislated to govern the sale and composition of a variety of percentage blends of fossil diesel and gasoline with these alternatives.
