Abstract
Wireless communications currently represents the second largest end application segment for semiconductor sales behind the computer market. However, wireless is growing much faster as a whole thanks to explosive growth in the smartphone segment and is poised to overtake the PC segment in the medium to longer term. The communications segment can be separated into two distinct markets, which include wired and wireless communications sectors. This report will focus on all products considered ¡°wireless¡± such as all mobile handsets (including smart phones), wireless infrastructure (including cellular base stations), short range wireless (802.11, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and NFC), and Other Wireless (which includes radio chips, and more). By itself, wireless is the second largest semiconductor segment behind the computer market with $71.8 billion in 2011 global sales or 23 percent of the total $319 billion semiconductor market. This industry is also the fastest growing market overall, witnessing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16 percent projected over the next five years.
